General Membership Meeting
Luncheon
June 12th 2008

From the Director

Angel Call
Executive Director

I would like to apologize for the lack of communication, we have purchased new software for better communication with members and have been having some technical issues and it is now cleared up. If you do not hear from me at least once monthly, please contact me by e-mail or phone.

All reports of theft and vandalism will go out to the membership as quickly as I get those reports.  If it is not reported to me, I cannot report it to the members and thefts and vandalism continue on and on.  Without the participation of the members we cannot catch and stop the thieves and vandals.  Please direct your job superintendents to report these illegal activities so that we can post reward fliers, talk to neighbors and witnesses, and work with law enforcement to provide snitches with reward money for turning in the thieves or recovering stolen equipment.

Members Make Tournament a Success

Fig Garden Golf Course
Fresno, CA

Thanks to all that attended

Those that braved the weather were rewarded with a tri-tip dinner and hundreds of raffle prizes.  A special appearance by golf course owner Dave Knott during dinner was a nice surprise, Especially surprising when Dave reached deep in his own pockets and gave away two of the biggest prizes of the night:   1 truck load of dirt @ $700 and 1 year membership to Fig Garden with a value over $3,000.   The free lessons went to the worst golfer of the day who asked to remain anonymous.

Joe Nocito watched as his attempt to win the Big Dog Chopper missed the mark by less than 12 inches.

The winners of the tournament were:

Louie Butler from Orco Supply

Louis C Brosi III with C-III Construction

Mike Gonzales with Cen-Cal Demolition

Tom Franco Simpson Strong Tie

This four some will be enjoying a $200 dollar wing ding @ Hooters.

Be sure to reserve your slots early for next year.  As the projection for next year show the tournament will sell out in advance.

Your participation raised nearly $4,500 to help combat construction crime.◘

New Website to Debut Soon

Angel call has been steadily working on getting the new website up and running.  The old website was hosted and maintained by a company that had control over content.  In order for CICPP to post or change anything on the site was a cumbersome process.  Someone had to call the web master and tell them what had to be changed; the web master would then make those changes at their convenience and charge the appropriate amount of time.  This left CICPP at times with outdated information and a lag time getting new information posted.

Now the executive director has the ability to immediately update info as needed.  We have the resources now to have immediate info updates when there is a theft or a recovery.  Before this could take up to few days before the information was posted.

Please check the website often as it will be updated with new member information as well as tips for site theft control and theft alerts and recoveries. ◘

Your Membership in Action

Fresno CA

Christmas Eve 2007, Angel Call Executive Director CICPP Central Valley receives an anonymous tip that a piece of construction equipment on a job site was in fact a piece that had been stolen.  Angel Call reports the tip to local law enforcement, who subsequently determined that the skip loader had been stolen two years ago from a Tri-County Grading and Paving jobsite. The skip loader apparently had been maintained and was found in good working order, currently being used on a job located at West McKinley and Grant land. We were able to return the tractor to the proper owners thanks to a tip from a concerned citizen the owners got the tractor back and the citizen that reported the theft received a $1000 reward.  Anyone who has information on a construction theft or vandalism can call our hotline, there does not need to be a conviction in order to receive the reward only an arrest, restitution, or recovery of the stolen items.  Make sure your employees are aware of this program.  By placing signs in several conspicuous places they can call the hotline and will be eligible to receive the $1000 reward. This program works; locally we have recovered over a million dollars of stolen construction equipment.◘

VANDALISM ALERT

On Monday evening March 10th / early morning on Tuesday the 11th two different jobs were vandalized.

The first was a R.J. Berry Jr. Construction job site in Tulare.  They are doing Road construction in an industrial area on “J” Street and have a fenced equipment yard on the corner of “J” & Cross.
The vandals/thieves cut through the perimeter fencing.  Several pieces of equipment had cut battery cables.  The job foreman was very cautious and had the oil checked in each piece of equipment before they were started.  No evidence was found that the vandals tampered with oil or fuel in the equipment.  In any case, they lost a day of work due to these vandals.  Due to the location of this job the only businesses that may have seen anything at the time of the crime were a McDonald and a Valero gas station.  I have spoken to management and left “REWARD FLYERS” at both businesses.

Again on Monday evening March 10th / early am on Tuesday the 11th. A Kroeker, Inc. job that had been vandalized a couple of weeks ago in Madera was hit again.  In the previous crime, thieves stole only small tools.  This time they did some very serious damage. The wiring to an extremely expensive rock crusher and stacker was cut and a generator was damaged. The Kroeker employees that work at the site said “there were Nike tennis shoe imprints and work boot imprints leading to a near by apartment complex” and that “there was a hack saw left by the damaged equipment”.
Madera Law enforcement is investigating at this time.  I have canvassed the area and the nearby apartment complex and distributed flyers. (Estimated cost of damage could exceed $20,000).

Theft Tip of the Month

Haul-Away Containers

With over 12,000 storage containers in use across the United States they have received reports of the same tactics being used over and over again.

One of the more clever tactics involves thieves targeting boxes that careless employees have left the locks on top of the containers or hanging from the day chain unlocked.

The thieves simply replace those locks with identical ones.  At the end of the day the thieves return, open the locks that they planted steal all the equipment and tools and replace the original lock.  Then when the container is opened at the start of the work day, viola, there is an empty container.  It immediately puts a cloud of suspicion on the employees.

To avoid this kind of theft activity make sure to lock the locks to the day chains and never leave unlocked locks in the obvious places such as on top of the container or in the containers locking mechanism. ◘

MARK YOUR EQUIPMENT

Imagine finding a suitcase stuffed with several million dollars.  What would be the first thing you would do?

1.)     Call your boss, you suddenly feel the flu coming on and will not be into work for several days.

2.)     Go immediately to the nearest travel agent and book the vacation of a lifetime.

3.)     Drive to the local exotic car dealership and test drive your new Ferrari, Corvette, or Toyota Prius.

4.)     Search the suitcase to find the name and address of the rightful owner, and return the cash immediately.

How many of you selected # 4?

OAN (owner applied number) which is recognized with all law enforcement throughout the United States. It takes less than two minutes to get your own OAN on line and it’s free.  See website www.agcrime.net. The OAN allows law enforcement agencies to locate equipment owners within any state & county in the United States, whether stolen equipment is found across the country or within the same county.  If you have any questions please call Angel Call @559-495-0470. ◘
